Set to transform packaging into a sustainable industry

As the latest report of Smithers Pira says, the arrival of new technologies and techniques is coinciding with renewed enthusiasm for greater sustainability from key participants within the packaging industry.

It’s known that flexible packaging have more benefits in terms of sustainability than another types of packaging, like that ones that are made with metal or glass. Latest report by Business Analyst says that a recent innovation in the flexible plastic packaging market, called modified atmospheric packaging (MAP), reduces the packaging cost by around 30%-33% in comparison to rigid plastic packaging. Referring to flexible packaging, there are many aspects that can surpass the benefits of its immediate substitute, rigid plastic packaging. Industry analysts forecast the global flexible plastic packaging market to grow at a CAGR of 6.03% during the period 2017-2021.

Besides, according Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), the life cycle attributes of flexible packaging demonstrate many more sustainable advantages. Firstly, Flexible packaging starts with less waste, greatly reducing landfill discards. Secondly, innovation and technology have enabled flexible packaging manufacturers to use fewer natural resources in the creation of their packaging, and improvements in production processes have reduced water and energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and volatile organic compounds. Even more, lighter-weight flexible packaging results in less transportation-related energy and fossil fuel consumption, and environmental pollution.

Increasingly, this type of packaging is being adopted across many different end-use sectors. Adds value and marketability to food and non-food products alike. From ensuring food safety and extending shelf life to providing even heating, barrier protection and ease of use. Moreover, the life cycle attributes of flexible packaging demonstrate many sustainable advantages.

Across many industry fields, as Smithers Pira says, sustainability is an increasing priority. This is specially true in packaging, because consumes high volumes of plastic. Moreover, companies and brand owners are increasingly seeing packaging as an easy target to cut their carbon footprint.
